POLICY: Mailboxes represent obstructions within road right-of-way and hazards to the traveling public.

The County Engineer encourages mailbox installations which minimize the hazard to the traveling public.

The following specifications represent the recommended mailbox installation to be used along county roads.

MATERIALS: Mailboxes shall be of an approved US Postal Service design. Decorative enhancements that increase the weight or mass of the mailbox are not permitted.

Wood posts shall be nominal 4" X 4" square or 4-1/2" round.

Steel posts shall be nominal 2" on the inner diameter.

Hardware (plates, screws, bolts, etc.) shall be commercial grade, galvanized steel.

SETTING POSTS: Posts shall be set in compacted earth or driven into the ground and shall in no instance be encased in concrete.

MOUNTING BOXES: Support hardware shall accommodate either a single or a double mailbox installation and no more than two boxes shall be mounted on a single post.

The mailbox shall be securely attached to the post.

The roadside face of the mailbox shall be no closer than 3 feet from the edge of the pavement. Where curbs are present, the face shall be 1 foot behind the face of the curb.

DAMAGE: Resurfacing the pavement and plowing snow require using 2 feet from the edge of the pavement. The top of the snowplow extends 1 foot further than the cutting edge, thus the need for the 3 foot clear area. Mailboxes struck by a plow or machine placed closer than feet will not be replaced. In no case will a box be replaced that has been damaged by "snow thrown from a plow."
